Links to All Of Twila Kearl's Articles

Twila McKinnon Kearl
11 July 1905 - 24 July 1965
Click poem to enlarge.
I stumbled onto Twila's articles by searching for "McKinnon" at Utah Digital Newspapers online. Thereafter, I searched for "Twila Kearl".  I also stumbled onto a few more, by checking headlines in whatever issue of the Reaper came up from other searches. With 6 exceptions, her articles were all entitled:

News from Our Boys and Girls in the U. S. Service

The exceptions were those numbered 4, 5, 26, 27, 65, and 66.

When I decided to create this blog, I contacted the Director of the Utah Digital Newspapers Project to get permission to use all of the linked articles listed herein.  All of the articles were "In the Public Domain" when I created this blog, but, readers of these articles should seek permission from me before attempting to use any of these articles for any purpose other than reading them on this blog.

Title, By-line, and Text.
A few of these articles do not show Twila Kearl's "by-line", which usually appears near the beginning of the article. There are a few such articles near the end of the list that may have been written by the Editor of the newspaper, possibly because Twila had health or family issues at these times. Even though a few of these articles were not written by her, I felt that all of them should be included, for continuity and closure.

I've listed the names mentioned in each article, to help readers find those of most interest to them. As of today, 12/31/2016, I have included a list of names, sorted by surname, in the right column.  They are listed with the Article Numbers in which the name(s) appears.  This should make it easy to look at article(s) in which there is a name you have interest in.

I truly believe these articles may have saved lives during the war, by helping those serving to be strong and endure, and helping those at home to have patience and courage while they waited for their loved ones to return.  We should all remember the brave men and women who have defended our great country, and our freedoms around the world!

I know that some of the articles and stories in this blog may bring tears to the eyes of some of my readers.  I am sorry, but I will not apologize, as these brave men and women deserve our deepest feelings,... out of appreciation for their sacrifices and the sacrifices of their families.

Please know that I intend this blog to be a MEMORIAL to all who served during World War 2, including those who waited, impatiently and with deep concern, for those serving to return.   Let pride in your country and for those who served this great nation and the world dry your tears.

It is my sincere hope that these articles will bring warmth to your heart, as they did to mine!

Rich County Reaper
1943-12-31
I wonder how many of these youth were from Utah.  A part of me applauds their patriotism, another thanks the government for returning them to their parents.

At this point, 1943 ends and 1944 begins. Most likely all our military and the parents of those serving were praying that the war would end early in the new year. Unfortunately their prayers are not answered in 1944, at least not completely.

Personal Note:  I suspect that Twila was busy during this period because my father, Twila's brother, Robert Gordon McKinnon, was home on furlough. The article at the left announces my parents wedding. It was in the 1944-10-27 issue.  In the picture at the right, I am the little guy at the left of the front row (circa mid- 1954). The house is the Randolph Stewart McKinnon and Birdie Amelia Graham McKinnon home in Randolph, Utah; which, my father inherited.  I've another blog that speaks about this house, which is where I lived until about age 4.

Just think, if my parents hadn't met, you wouldn't be reading this blog.

A Closing Note from the Author

I came upon a Wikipedia report, that said that World War II officially began 1 September 1939 and ended on 15 August 1945.  It also gave an estimate of the number of people killed during World War II as "an estimated 50 million to 85 million fatalities." Even 50 million staggers the mind!

May God help us avoid anything close to that in another war.  Let's hope the current events in the world (ISIS, for instance) will not lead to another such World War.  If it comes, may He guide our nation and allies to bring it to a swift and less painful end!!  --- Robert B. McKinnon

Thanks to Utah Digital Newspapers

We owe a debt of gratitude to the Utah Digital Newspapers Project, begun by the University of Utah, and assisted along by BYU and others. The Utah Digital Newaspapers (UDN) site, as of July 2010, provides access to 1 Million digitized articles, which provide untold millions of valuable bits of history. This site provided access to Twila Kearl's articles that are the basis of this Blog.

I'd also like to thank John Herbert, Program Director, Utah Digital Newspapers, for his quick response to my email seeking permission to prepare our publication of Twila's articles. His letter is why you'll see specific UDN Reference URLs associated with each article.

The UDN program's motto is: "Creating Citizen Historians", and indeed that is in fact what it has done, with regard to myself, at any rate. We will reference their site and the articles they so diligently preserved throughout this site. We encourage you to visit UDN's site, and use it to make history come alive for yourself and your family.

The UDN Project provides the citizens of Utah, the United States of America, and indeed the world with an invaluable resource for historical research. Please DONATE to the UDN Project, if you can, to help it continue with this inestimably valuable work!

Thinking of Aunt Twila

Recently, my sister, Monalee McKinnon, found herself thinking about our Aunt, Twila McKinnon Kearl. We chatted online about it for a time, and as I researched online for information about Twila, we came to realize just how important were Twila's efforts during World War II. We felt inclined to re-publish Aunt Twila's articles, to make them more accessible and understood by the descendants of those who Twila helped keep in touch. This Blog is a beginning, and perhaps something more will come of it.
